Markster overview
Markster keeps your internet bookmarks in a central store. People use Markster because either:
- The internal bookmarks facilities (Bookmarks Bar, Bookmarks Menu, Favorites Bar, etc.) in their web browser(s) do not meet their feature expectations.
- They use more than one web browser, and prefer to keep all their bookmarks in a separate app, independent of the web browsers, instead of syncing the browsers' internal bookmarks facilities together.
When Markster users want to visit a bookmark they have previously stored, or add a new bookmark, instead of reaching for the Bookmarks Bar or Bookmarks Menu in the browser, they bring up Markster's Floating Menu. Markster provides three ways to do that:
- Global Keyboard Shortcut, for example Cmd-Shift-D.
- Dock Menu
- Status Menulet (right side of Menu Bar)
The keyboard shortcut and/or status menulet are enable/disabled in Markster's preferences.
What's new in version 3.3.9
Note: We have been testing in macOS 27 Golden Gate and have thus far not found any issues which are specific to macOS 27.
- No longer works in macOS 11. Now requires macOS 12 or later.
- We’ve added support for so many web browsers this year that the Export Exclusions list in the Inspector Window needed a scroller to show all of them. That scroller is now in place.
- Now pre-encodes apostrophe (
') characters in URLs when exporting to Chrome-ish browsers. This eliminates churn for users who have such bookmarks. The churn started recently due to a change in these browsers. - When a Verify operation encounters a site managed by Cloudflare which returns a 403 “Not authorized” error due to our being actually a bot and do not responding to its “Verify you are human” challenge, now categorizes this bookmark as good instead of as broken.
- In the Inspector window, bottom collapsible URLs area, repositioned some graphics which have been misplaced in recent versions due to changes in Apple’s build tools.

Two users have reported that Markster crashes on launch after the upgrade to version 3. We are working on this. In the meantime, we have a quick workaround, which is given in the forum on our website:

I’m constantly switching between Safari, Firefox and Brave whenever a new version is released, so this eliminates the need to export bookmarks from one browser and import to another. Now that I’ve gotten used to saving all new bookmarks to Markster, and going to the menubar to visit a saved site, it makes things a lot easier to change browsers without missing any bookmarks. The initial set-up can be slightly confusing with the many sort and save options, but overall it’s a great app that I’ve come to rely on.

Having found this developer's previous bookmarking tools extremely useful and reliable, I happily chose Markster when I realized that my FF set was growing too quickly to make it easily manageable. I was not disappointed.
Markster is extremely fully-featured - the most extensive software of its kind that I came across when researching bookmark managers.
It's also very robust and reliable.
Reasonably-priced too, the developers are very responsive to questions, explaining anything which isn't immediately obvious (thanks to its rich feature set) in the Help that comes with it.
Most impressive, perhaps, is the way in which the design has anticipated the way that users are likely actually to work when collecting and using bookmarks. It's hard to think of an operation that's not included in Markster - or imagine how it could have been implemented better.
Surely the market leader.

I see 3 different bookmarking apps that Sheep Systems makes here. I thought it was quite clear at first what I was looking at, but once I started reviewing the products I became somewhat uncertain. @Developer, which of your products most closely compares with Pins (http://pinsapp.com)?
